Chapter 1 - THE PUSH

Bradley shoved me into the pool because his family wanted a laugh.
Fifteen minutes later, I called the attorney who controlled every legal wire holding his life together.
The water was so cold it felt like being hit.
One second I was standing on wet grass behind a luxury rental house, staring at my husband. The next, two of his cousins released my arms and Bradley planted both hands against my shoulders.
"Maybe next time you will think before embarrassing my mother," he said.
Then he pushed.
Black water closed over my head.
For several terrifying seconds, I could not breathe. When I surfaced, coughing, the first thing I heard was laughter. Barbara was clapping, and his cousins pointed at me like I was the night's entertainment.
Bradley stood in the middle of them with his arms spread wide.
"There she is!" he shouted. "Our big successful CEO!"
More laughter.
I climbed the ladder without saying a word.
My clothes poured water onto the deck. Bradley's grin faded as I looked at him.
"Maddie," he said, suddenly cautious. "Come on. It was a joke."
I unlocked my phone.
Barbara rolled her eyes. "Do not be dramatic."
I called Serena Walsh, lead corporate counsel for Bennett Mobility Group, the company I built before I met Bradley.
She answered on the second ring.
"Maddie?"
"Serena, I need you to execute the emergency governance package."
Silence.
Then her voice changed.
"Are you safe?"
"Yes."
"Do you want me to activate all of it?"
I looked at Bradley.
He had stopped smiling.
"All of it. Revoke his signing authority. Freeze every company card under his name. Suspend his executive access. Notify the board that his employment is under immediate review. Preserve every email, message, expense report and security log tied to him."
Bradley's face emptied.
"Maddie, what the hell are you doing?"
I kept talking.
"And Serena?"
"Yes?"
"Pull the prenup and the family trust documents. I want the divorce team ready tonight."
Barbara laughed nervously. "He is your husband."
"That is what he thinks too."
Serena lowered her voice.
"Maddie, there is something else. We found a document this afternoon with Bradley's signature on it."
My stomach tightened.
"What document?"
"A personal guarantee for eight million dollars."
May you like
Bradley went white.
And I knew the pool had only been the beginning.
