Chapter 4 - THE EIGHT-MILLION-DOLLAR SIGNATURE

Serena joined me by video that night while I locked myself in the upstairs office.

Serena shared the document on screen.

PERSONAL AND CORPORATE GUARANTEE - $8,000,000.

My company name appeared at the top.

My digital signature appeared at the bottom.

I had never seen it.

"Where did this come from?"

"A lender contacted finance this afternoon to verify authority. The guarantee supports a development company called North Shore Leisure Partners."

"Who owns it?"

Serena's expression told me I would not like the answer.

"Bradley owns twenty percent. Barbara Bennett owns ten. The rest is held through an LLC tied to Bradley's cousin Derek."

I leaned back.

Derek.

One of the men who had held my arm.

"What are they buying?"

"A lakeside resort project."

I looked out the office window toward the black pool.

Of course.

Bradley's family had spent the weekend whispering about an "opportunity" that would make them wealthy.

"My signature is forged."

"That is our preliminary conclusion."

"Can Bradley bind the company?"

"Not for a transaction this size. Board approval is required."

"So the guarantee fails?"

"Most likely. But somebody represented that you approved it."

I remembered Bradley borrowing my unlocked phone two weeks earlier.

"Serena, preserve device logs. Everything."

"Already doing it."

A knock hit the door.

"Maddie!"

Bradley.

"Open the door."

I muted the call.

"What?"

"You are humiliating me in front of my family."

I almost laughed.

"You pushed me into a pool in front of your family."

"That was different."

"How?"

Silence.

Then he said the sentence that ended whatever remained of us.

"Because you made me look weak first."

I unmuted Serena.

She had heard it.

"Maddie," she said quietly, "do not sign anything tonight. Do not give him access to your phone. And do not leave any original documents in that house."

"Why?"

"Because the lender sent us one more thing."

She opened another file.

It was a board consent form.
