Chapter 17 - WHY BARBARA WAS COPIED

Barbara did not work for Bennett Mobility.
So why was she copied on an internal expense email?
The answer was embarrassing in a different way.
Two years earlier, Bradley convinced me to hire Barbara briefly for community relations. Her contract ended, but her company email stayed active.
Bradley kept forwarding budgets, client lists, executive travel, and board schedules to it.
Barbara claimed she never understood the sensitivity.
That might have been true at first.
But Dana's email showed Barbara advising Bradley how to "clean up" an expense description so finance would not ask questions.
Serena asked whether I wanted to pursue every possible claim against her.
I thought about it.
Then I said, "Pursue what the evidence supports. Nothing more."
I did not need to crush Barbara.
I needed the truth documented.
Meanwhile, Bradley's financial reality arrived all at once.
His salary, company vehicle, card, and unvested equity were gone.
The resort lender withdrew after learning the guarantee was disputed and unauthorized.
North Shore Leisure Partners collapsed within days.
Derek blamed Bradley.
Barbara blamed me.
Bradley blamed everyone.
That was the pattern.
Nora finally sent me the first realistic divorce settlement proposal.
Bradley would keep his premarital investment account, his retirement rights as legally calculated, his share of joint cash, and personal property.
I would retain my company, trust, premarital real estate, and separately titled assets.
No one was penniless.
But Bradley was not leaving with twenty-two million dollars.
He was leaving with the life he had actually built, not the one he planned to extract from mine.
He rejected the proposal.
Then he sent me a text.
WE NEED TO TALK WITHOUT LAWYERS.
I almost ignored it.

Then another message came.
THERE IS SOMETHING ABOUT THE EIGHT-MILLION-DOLLAR GUARANTEE YOU STILL DO NOT KNOW.
