Chapter 14 - BARBARA COMES TO MY OFFICE

Barbara arrived at my office Wednesday without an appointment.

Security called upstairs.

I almost refused her.

Then I said let her in.

She walked into the conference room carrying a leather folder.

No makeup.

No jewelry except her wedding ring.

For the first time since I met her, she looked older than she wanted anyone to know.

"I need you to stop."

"Stop what?"

"Destroying my son."

I sat across from her.

"Bradley is forty years old."

"He made a mistake."

"Several."

She pushed the folder toward me.

Inside were family photographs from our wedding, Christmas, and my company's anniversary.

"Remember who he was," she said.

I looked at the pictures.

"I do."

That was the problem.

I remembered the man who brought me soup, danced with me in the kitchen, and once drove three hours when my car broke down. Love did not require pretending the worst thing had not happened.

Barbara leaned forward.

"He can change."

"Maybe."

Hope entered her eyes.

I continued.

"He can change without being married to me."

Her face hardened.

"You always thought you were better than us."

"No."

"Yes, you did. You walked into our family with your money and your company and made Bradley feel small."

I stood.

"I spent years making myself smaller so he would not feel that way."

She flinched.

"I stopped talking about deals at dinner. I let him take credit for introductions. I funded vacations he told people he paid for. I hired relatives I would not have hired otherwise. None of it was enough."

Barbara's eyes filled.

Then she said something I did not expect.

"He told me you were going to leave him."

"When?"

"Last year."

My stomach tightened.

I had never planned to leave.

Bradley had been preparing his family to see me as the enemy long before the pool.

Then Barbara added, "He said there was another man."

I stared at her.

May you like

There had never been another man.

But Bradley had needed one in the story.
