Chapter 18 - THE LAST SECRET

I agreed to meet Bradley in a hotel conference room with Nora in the next room and security nearby.

No private house.

No alcohol.

No family audience.

Bradley looked thinner.

For once, he did not perform confidence.

"The guarantee was not supposed to be used," he said.

"It was submitted to a lender."

"Derek submitted it early."

"That does not make the forgery better."

"I know."

I waited.

He rubbed his hands together.

"Halcyon promised me a role if Bennett sold."

"I know."

"Ethan was supposed to make the financial pressure look worse than it was."

"I know."

His eyes closed.

"Mom did not know about Halcyon."

"I believe that."

He looked surprised.

I continued.

"She knew enough. Not everything."

He nodded.

"There is more."

Of course there was.

Bradley had opened a personal line of credit for two million dollars to fund the resort deposits.

He expected his future equity units to cover it.

He had pledged those expected units as part of his personal financial statement, even though they were unvested and restricted.

"The bank is calling the line," he said.

I understood.

The fortune he bragged about had never existed.

He had borrowed against an expectation.

"What do you want from me?"

His eyes filled.

"Help."

For years that word would have worked.

I had helped with his career.

His family.

His confidence.

His mistakes.

I had mistaken rescue for love.

"No."

He flinched.

"Maddie."

"You need a lawyer and a financial adviser. You need to cooperate with the company investigation. You need to deal with the lender honestly."

"You could fix this with one wire."

"I could."

Hope appeared.

I continued.

"I will not."

He stared at me.

"So you want me ruined."

"No."

I stood.

"I want you responsible for your own life."

As I reached the door, he said, "I really did love you."

I turned back.

May you like

"I believe you."

That hurt him more than if I had called him a liar.
