Chapter 1 - THE CAMERA WAS RUNNING

The first slap turned my face toward the diamond wall. The second put me on the marble floor.

For one strange second, all I could hear was the soft hum of the jewelry cases.

Nathan stood over me in a charcoal suit, breathing hard. Beside him, Celeste wore champagne silk and the smile of a woman who thought she had just watched a wife get erased.

“What are you doing here?” Nathan snapped. “Are you following me now?”

I tasted blood where my teeth had cut my lip. Around us, three sales associates stared at the carpet. A security guard near the door shifted his weight but didn’t move.

I looked at the ring on my hand.

Nathan had proposed with it in this same store four years earlier. He had said, We build everything together.

I stood, slid the ring off, and placed it on the glass counter.

“I came to return this.”

Celeste’s smile widened.

Nathan laughed once. “Good. Then we understand each other.”

“We do.” I looked straight at him. “My lawyer will be claiming half your shares by tomorrow.”

The color left his face.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

He dropped his voice. “Emma, don’t do anything stupid.”

“I already did. I married you.”

I turned toward the door.

“Wait.”

For the first time that afternoon, Nathan sounded afraid.

I kept walking.

What he didn’t know was that I had not come to return a ring. I had come because my attorney needed evidence that Nathan still treated the flagship store as his personal property after transferring control away from me with a signature I had never written.

He had given me more than that.

He had hit me twice beneath four ceiling cameras.

And the store’s transaction archive, twenty feet behind him, contained the forged shareholder authorization that could destroy him.

My phone buzzed as the doors opened.

My attorney, Rachel Monroe.

DON’T LEAVE THE BLOCK.

Then another message appeared.

WE FOUND YOUR FATHER’S SIGNATURE ON THE SAME DOCUMENT.

I stopped on the sidewalk.

My father had been dead for twelve years.
