Chapter 12 - MY FATHER'S CONFESSION

I wanted a reunion.

Instead, I got testimony.

My father told Detective Shah everything while I sat across from him at the cabin table.

After the crash, he woke in Vermont with Evelyn caring for him. Charles visited two days later with photographs of me leaving school.

“He told me accidents happen twice,” Dad said.

So he stayed dead.

Marianne helped move him between safe locations while collecting evidence against Charles.

Julian resurfaced secretly and joined them.

Then my mother died.

“Why didn’t you come back then?” I asked.

Dad’s face broke.

“Because Charles sent me a video of you asleep in your college dorm.”

I went cold.

“He had a key?”

“He had someone inside the building.”

For years, Dad and Julian tried to build a criminal case without exposing me. They failed because Charles controlled lawyers, vendors, and witnesses.

Then Nathan entered my life.

“Did you know about him?”

Dad nodded.

“I begged Evelyn to warn you. Charles intercepted the message.”

I stood.

“So everyone knew except me.”

“Emma—”

“No. You all made choices about my life and called it protection.”

Julian spoke quietly. “You’re right.”

That stopped me.

“No excuse?”

“No.”

He slid a ledger toward me.

“This is why we came back now.”

It documented twenty years of payments through Charles’s shell companies.

At the bottom of the newest page was Nathan’s name.

Beside it was another.

Celeste Reed.

And a third I recognized immediately.

Rachel Monroe.

My lawyer.

I stared at the name.

Dad said, “Emma, before you trust anyone else, ask Rachel why Charles paid her firm two hundred thousand dollars last year.”
