Chapter 11 - THE UNCLE WHO NEVER EXISTED

His name was Julian Mercer.

Not Vale.

My grandfather had fathered him before marrying my grandmother. He grew up outside the family but later helped build the company’s overseas gemstone network.

Then twenty-six years ago, Julian vanished after accusing Charles of laundering money through diamond suppliers.

“Charles erased him,” Eleanor said. “From the company histories. From the family archives. Everywhere he could.”

“Was he killed?”

“I don’t know.”

Rachel studied the old agreement. Julian owned ten percent of the original company, held in escrow until a fraud investigation ended.

It never ended.

If Julian was alive, his vote combined with mine could remove Charles immediately.

That explained Friday.

Charles did not just need my shares.

He needed the entire family voting structure locked before anyone could challenge him.

We finally understood “the Founder.”

Not a person.

A code name for the original founder agreement.

Nathan had misunderstood it.

But one problem remained.

Why was my father still hiding?

Eleanor gave us a location in Vermont that only she and Evelyn had used to pass messages.

We drove there before sunset.

The cabin looked abandoned.

Then a light came on inside.

I forgot how to breathe.

A man opened the door.

Older. Thinner. A scar along his jaw.

But he had my eyes.

“Emma.”

I crossed the porch before I knew I was moving.

My father caught me with both arms.

For twelve years, I had imagined this moment.

I had never imagined the first thing I would say.

“You let me think you were dead.”

He whispered into my hair, “I know.”

Then another man stepped from the shadows behind him.

May you like

My father looked at me.

“Emma, meet your uncle Julian.”
