Chapter 16 - THE BIRTHDAY VOTE

At 8:55 a.m., I walked into the Vale-Cross boardroom with a bruise still visible beneath my makeup.

Charles’s chair was empty.

Nathan’s chair was empty.

My mother’s old seat waited at the head of the table.

I sat there.

Board members whispered.

At 9:00 exactly, Rachel placed the trust certification in front of me.

“Happy birthday,” she said softly.

Thirty percent of the company vested in my name.

Then counsel for Charles appeared on video.

He filed an emergency challenge claiming I lacked capacity to vote because of “recent emotional instability and domestic conflict.”

The trap Rachel warned me about.

I stood.

“Play the store footage.”

The room watched Nathan slap me twice.

Then they watched me stand without touching him, remove my ring, and calmly announce legal action.

Rachel followed with the forged transfer, the shell ledgers, and proof of Charles’s attempt to use my stolen biometric token.

One director whispered, “My God.”

Charles’s lawyer demanded a recess.

I refused.

“Under the trust, I have the right to call a removal vote.”

“You don’t have the numbers,” he said.

The boardroom doors opened.

My father walked in.

Gasps broke around the table.

Then Julian entered behind him.

Charles’s lawyer went white.

Julian placed the original founder agreement on the table.

“With my restored ten percent,” he said, “she has the numbers.”

The vote began.

Eight minutes later, Charles Whitmore was removed as permanent trustee.

But before anyone could celebrate, every screen in the boardroom went black.

Charles appeared live.

He was sitting somewhere dark.

Behind him was Nathan.

Tied to a chair.
