Chapter 15 - EVELYN'S CHOICE

Evelyn March came out of hiding before dawn.
She walked into a federal office carrying two suitcases of records and looked exactly like a woman who had spent twelve years sleeping beside exits.
Celeste broke when she saw her.
I didn’t.
I was too angry.
“You picked my husband?”
Evelyn nodded.
“I believed Nathan was weak, not cruel.”
“That distinction means very little to me.”
“I know.”
She explained that Charles had begun interviewing potential partners around me years earlier through social introductions, charity boards, business conferences.
He wanted someone charming, indebted, and controllable.
Evelyn learned Nathan was on the list.
She secretly paid off one of his debts, hoping gratitude would make him answer to her instead.
Instead, Charles outbid her.
“You gambled with my marriage.”
“Yes.”
“You all keep calling manipulation protection.”
Evelyn’s eyes lowered. “That is the ugliest truth in this room.”
She gave Detective Shah the missing link: recordings of Charles discussing shell companies, threats, and Marianne’s death.
Not murder.
But blackmail.
Charles had discovered Marianne’s dependence on sedatives and threatened to expose her as unstable unless she stopped investigating him.
The night she died, she had taken too much during a panic attack.
Charles didn’t kill her with his hands.
He weaponized fear until she destroyed herself.
I cried for the first time since the jewelry store.
Then an agent ran into the room.
They had raided the cutting house.
Charles was gone.
The server room had been wiped.
But one live connection remained.
May you like
It was transmitting to the Vale boardroom.
My birthday meeting began in forty-three minutes.
