Chapter 10 - THE WOMAN WHO BUILT THE TRUST

Eleanor Vale was eighty-two years old and still chaired half the charities in Boston.
She was also the woman who created the trust everyone was trying to steal.
When I arrived at her townhouse with Rachel and Detective Shah, she was drinking tea beneath a portrait of my mother.
“You finally found Marianne’s safe,” she said.
I stopped cold.
“You knew about it?”
“I paid for it.”
“Did you pay Dr. Halpern too?”
For the first time, my grandmother’s hand paused.
Detective Shah placed the payment record on the table.
Eleanor read it and sighed.
“I paid him to keep the toxicology private.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother was taking sedatives secretly.”
“She was drugged.”
“No.” Eleanor looked at me. “She was terrified and barely sleeping.”
“Then why hide it?”
“Because Charles was already preparing to claim she was mentally incompetent. If the report became public, he would have seized control of the company.”
I wanted to believe her.
“Did you know Dad survived?”
Her eyes closed.
“Yes.”
The betrayal landed quietly.
“You let me bury an empty coffin.”
“I kept you alive.”
“You let me think he abandoned me.”
“I chose the lie that kept you breathing.”
I stood so fast the tea rattled.
Eleanor didn’t stop me.
At the door, she said, “Emma, your father is not the only person Charles hid.”
I turned.
She reached into a drawer and removed an old photograph.
My mother stood beside Charles, Evelyn, and another man I did not recognize.
On the back were four words:
THE ORIGINAL VALE AGREEMENT.
“Who is he?” I asked.
Eleanor’s voice dropped.
“Your mother’s brother.”
May you like
“My mother didn’t have a brother.”
“That is what Charles needed everyone to believe.”
