Chapter 20 - What We Inherit

Lily turned one on a warm Sunday in May.
We had twelve people in our backyard.
Mara came with flowers. Martinez brought a toy police car that Lily immediately threw into the grass. Helen joined by video and cried when Michael called her family.
He still woke up at night when he heard Lily cry. Sometimes I found him standing beside her crib, one hand on the rail, watching her breathe.
I still hated balconies.
Bennett Group survived.
Michael kept his promise. Family dividends were frozen until every stolen dollar that could be recovered was returned. Employee pension losses were repaid first. He stepped down as CEO six months later and remained only as a voting trustee while an outside executive took over.
Andrew's letter was framed in Michael's office, not because Michael wanted to worship the father he never knew, but because one sentence mattered.
You inherited a choice.
On Lily's birthday, Michael carried her outside as the sun went down.
She grabbed his nose and squealed.
He kissed her fingers.
"One day," he told her, "people are going to tell you your last name means something."
I leaned against the doorframe. "It does mean something."
Michael looked at me.
I smiled. "It means your grandma is going to be in prison when you learn to drive."
He laughed so hard Lily laughed too.
Then he grew serious.
"No," he said. "Her name doesn't decide who she is. Neither does mine."
He looked at our daughter--the baby Diane had tried to erase before the truth could grow old enough to speak for itself.
"What decides is what we do when we finally know the truth."
Lily rested her head against his chest.
A year earlier, I had watched her fall through open air and believed our family was ending.
I was wrong.
That was the night the false family ended.
The real one began when Michael caught her.
Not because of blood.
Not because of money.
Not because of the Bennett name.
May you like
Because when everything built on lies finally broke apart, we chose the one thing Diane never understood.
We chose each other.
