Chapter 9 - Helen Gray

Police issued an alert for Victor's car.
Bennett Group suspended him within the hour, but by then his office had been emptied, his company phone was dead, and forty-two files had vanished from the corporate server.
At 6:13 p.m., a state trooper found Victor's abandoned car near a rest stop. Helen was inside, alone and shaken but alive.
Victor was gone.
We spoke to Helen by video from the hospital.
Her hair was white, her voice thin, but her memory was sharp.
"I delivered Michael," she said.
Michael stared at the screen.
"Did my mother tell you Robert was my father?"
"She told everyone." Helen's mouth tightened. "But Andrew came to the clinic two weeks before he died. He knew Diane was carrying his child."
"Did he sign something?"
"Yes. A sworn acknowledgment. He said he wanted his child protected if anything happened to him."
"What happened to it?"
"I gave one copy to the Bennett family lawyer and hid another."
"Where?" I asked.
Helen hesitated.
"Robert's lake house. There's an old wall safe behind the stone fireplace."
Michael frowned. "I grew up in that house."
"That's why Robert chose it later. He found my copy after Andrew died and moved it there. He told me he was too afraid of Diane to use it, but too ashamed to destroy it."
Helen began crying.
"I should have spoken years ago."
Michael's anger softened. "You're speaking now."
Helen looked at him for a long moment.
Then she said, "There's something else."
The room went still.
"Victor wasn't trying to get me to tell him where the document was."
"Then what did he want?"
"He already knew."
Helen looked terrified.
"He wanted the security code to the lake house."
Michael reached for his phone.
