Chapter 3 - The Clause

By sunrise, the Bennett family had two emergencies: Lily's attempted murder and a company that suddenly looked like a crime scene.

Margaret Shaw met us in a private hospital conference room. She was seventy-two, sharp-eyed, and furious enough to make Michael's attorneys look nervous.

She laid an old trust agreement on the table.

"Your grandfather Henry Bennett built the company," she said. "He gave controlling voting rights to the line of his eldest son. That was Andrew."

Michael rubbed his face. "Andrew died before he had children."

Margaret looked at him. "That's what Diane reported."

"Andrew didn't die childless. Diane was pregnant with you when he died. She was married to Robert, Andrew's younger brother, and she named Robert as your father."

Michael stared at her. "And Lily?"

"Henry added a bloodline verification clause. The birth of the next generation allows any beneficiary to demand an independent audit and kinship review before control transfers."

I understood first.

"That's why Diane hated my pregnancy."

Margaret nodded. "Lily made the old paperwork dangerous."

The missing-money report showed shell vendors, fake consulting fees, and investment losses that never existed. Thirty-one point eight million dollars had disappeared over eight years while Diane chaired the family trust and Victor controlled company finances.

Michael stood so fast his chair rolled backward.

"She tried to kill my daughter to hide theft?"

Margaret's voice softened. "I'm afraid the theft may be the smallest secret."

A hospital security officer entered and handed the detective a tablet.

"We pulled the gala footage."

On-screen, Diane stood near the balcony with Lily in her arms. Victor approached. They spoke for eight seconds.

Then Victor slipped a folded piece of paper into Diane's hand.

Diane read it.

Her face hardened.

Thirty seconds later, she threw Lily over the railing.

The detective zoomed in on the paper after it fell to the carpet.
