Chapter 7 - The Witness Who Ran

The compromise was a church basement three blocks from the federal courthouse. I went inside alone. Martinez had officers outside. Michael waited in an unmarked car, furious enough to chew through the dashboard.

Mara stepped out from behind a row of folding chairs.

She handed me a flash drive.

"I found the missing money six months ago. Victor used fake vendors, pension transfers, even dead employees. Diane approved everything."

"Why didn't you report it?"

"I did. To the company's outside compliance lawyer."

"What happened?"

"He called Victor ten minutes later."

My stomach dropped.

Mara wiped her eyes. "Then Diane started building a case against you."

"Against me?"

"She opened accounts tied to your name. She copied your signature from charity forms. If the audit hit, you were supposed to look like the thief."

I could barely process it.

"Why Lily?"

Mara looked at me like she hated what she had to say.

"Because Lily's birth made the trust review possible. And because if you were charged with stealing from the company, Diane planned to argue you had lied about Lily's paternity too. She wanted Michael divorced, isolated, and under her control before he turned thirty-five."

A metal door slammed upstairs.

Mara went pale.

"That's them."

The lights died.

I heard footsteps running down the stairs.

Mara shoved me behind a concrete pillar as a man entered the basement.

"Give me the drive!" he shouted.

I threw a metal folding chair into his path. He crashed into it. Mara and I ran through the kitchen and out a side door.

Michael was already sprinting toward us.

Police tackled the man before he reached the alley.

Back at the hotel, we opened Mara's flash drive.

There were spreadsheets, bank records, scanned signatures--and one video file labeled ROBERT_PRIVATE_2018.

Michael clicked it.

His dead father appeared on-screen.

Robert Bennett looked sick and exhausted.

"If you're watching this, Michael," he said, "then I failed to stop your mother."

He leaned toward the camera.

May you like

"And you need to know the truth.

Diane killed Andrew because Andrew was about to expose us."
