Chapter 8 - Robert's Confession

"I need you to understand," Robert said on-screen. "I was not innocent."
He explained that Andrew had discovered a vendor kickback scheme inside Bennett Group. Victor built the shell companies. Robert signed early transfers. Diane helped hide them because she wanted Robert to become CEO instead of Andrew.
Then Diane became pregnant.
Robert's voice shook.
"I knew the baby wasn't mine."
Michael whispered, "He knew."
On the video, Robert nodded as if answering him across time.
"Andrew was your father. He planned to tell the family after he shut down the fraud. Diane believed that would destroy everything--our marriage, my career, her place in the family."
I reached for Michael's hand.
He didn't pull away.
Robert continued. "Diane arranged the brake job. I knew she was planning to scare Andrew. I told myself that was all. After he died, I helped cover it up. That makes me a coward, and maybe worse."
Robert described the trust. Andrew's biological child would inherit controlling voting rights at thirty-five. Diane hid Michael's paternity and kept Andrew's shares classified as dormant founder shares, allowing herself and Victor to manipulate them.
Then Robert said something that made Mara lean toward the screen.
"There is one original document Diane never found. Andrew signed a paternity acknowledgment before he died. Nurse Helen Gray witnessed it."
Martinez searched the name.
Helen Gray was eighty-one and living in a private care home two hours north.
We called.
The receptionist went quiet.
"She isn't here."
"When did she leave?" I asked.
"Twenty minutes ago. A man signed her out."
"Who?"
The receptionist checked the log.

Her voice dropped.
"Victor Hale."
