Chapter 14 - The Man I Used to Be

I went to Adam's office with Priya, not alone. Adam sat behind a desk overlooking Madison Avenue, wearing the patient smile he used when investors questioned a bad number.
"Your family needs to calm down," he said. "Elena is aging. Mateo has a business to protect. We can settle this quietly."
Priya asked him to identify the legal authority allowing Vanessa to sign for Mom. He handed over a packet. At the top was a sworn declaration describing my mother as unable to manage her finances. Under it lay a blank line for my signature.
"Sign here," Adam said. "The rest is housekeeping."
I remembered the hospital hallway. My father's frail hands. Another man telling me to sign first and ask later.
"No," I said.
Adam's smile vanished. "You know what happens to the hotel financing without this agreement. Hundreds of employees, Mateo. A lot of families."
"If my company is in trouble, I'll deal with it without stealing my mother's home."
Priya stood. "We've seen enough."
Outside, I called Ruth and asked her to prepare truthful records for the lender even if the disclosure cost me my job. I also told Sofia I would testify about the hospital signature, including the part that made me look foolish.
"You're doing what you should have done a long time ago," she said. "Don't expect me to clap."
"I don't."
For the first time, the answer felt right. I didn't need forgiveness to know which door to walk through.

At the curb, my phone showed a new email from the lender. An internal review had found a second collateral exhibit bearing Mom's supposed signature. The date was yesterday. Mom had spent yesterday with Dr. Feld.
Someone was still forging documents, even after the police arrived.
