Chapter 18 - The Red Folder

Chen reached the building before Adam and Vanessa could leave. I arrived after them, breathing hard from the subway stairs. In the lobby, Vanessa gripped a red folder so tightly its corner bent. Adam stood several feet away, suddenly unable to remember how he knew her.
"It's my husband's property," Vanessa told Chen.
"The ownership records say otherwise," Chen replied. "We're going to discuss why you were trying to remove evidence."
Adam demanded a lawyer. He was entitled to one. That didn't make the visitor logs, altered exhibits, and bank records disappear. Sofia had already provided the original video showing Vanessa concealing a second signature sheet. Mira had provided invoices and emails. Daniel had agreed to give a sworn statement about his own role.
Vanessa saw Sofia beside me. "You chose them over your mother."
"I chose the person you hurt," Sofia answered. "I wish you'd given me a harder choice."
I had never heard my daughter sound so tired.
The folder contained copies of the proposed transfer, invoices to Ninth Cedar, and a draft agreement promising Vanessa a substantial payment if the loan and sale closed. It also held a recent email from Adam telling her to "keep Elena manageable" before the final signing.
The investigators did not announce a trial in the lobby. They interviewed the witnesses, took the relevant material through the appropriate process, and continued tracing the accounts. Days later, prosecutors brought charges including attempted financial theft and document fraud; Vanessa also faced the consequences of the assault on Mom. Adam's legal problems were no longer something he could dismiss with a phone call.

On the night I filed for separation, Adam's defense attorney sent Priya one last document: a signed statement claiming I had known the apartment was collateral all along.
The signature was mine. This time, I knew exactly when I'd written it.
