Chapter 17 - The Lie About Rafael

Dad had died in a Manhattan hospital after a long illness. The official medical record was not in dispute. Vanessa's message was designed to make me doubt even that. Priya told me not to negotiate with a threat; she preserved the package and gave it to Chen.

On the drive, a recording captured Adam talking to Vanessa about Dad's final week. "The old man won't sign," Adam said. "Daniel has the originals. Mateo will sign anything if you tell him it'll help his father."

Vanessa laughed softly. "He always wants to be the good son."

I could hardly breathe. They had studied the best part of me and used it as a tool. Then I thought of Mom asking me to believe her, and understood how often that supposed best part had failed her.

Daniel listened to the recording beside me. "Dad was sick, Mateo. But Adam didn't kill him. He took advantage of the time we had left. I helped him by staying quiet."

Priya also received the pharmacist's account of discrepancies between Mom's prescribed tablets and pills Sofia had saved. The physician documented unexplained sedation and a serious safety concern. Investigators were working to determine how the extra medicine entered the organizer. We had evidence of danger, not permission to invent answers.

That night Mr. Bell called. Vanessa had returned to Park Avenue with movers and tried to take boxes from Dad's study. The building's security team refused to release items covered by the existing preservation request. Vanessa shouted that it was her house.

Mom, hearing about it, straightened in her chair. "Tell Mr. Bell something for me," she said. "She never owned one brick of it."

Then my phone displayed a photo from the lobby camera: Adam was standing beside Vanessa, carrying Dad's blue linen box.
