Chapter 2 - The Name She Pointed At

My brother Daniel had been missing for twelve years. We didn't use his name at dinner, at holidays, or even when my mother asked whether he might someday come home. So hearing it from Vanessa, with two police officers watching, felt like someone opening a locked room inside my chest.
Officer Chen asked for the document Vanessa had wanted signed. Vanessa said it was a medical release. Sofia said she'd heard the words "property authorization." My mother said nothing until Chen spoke quietly: "Mrs. Alvarez, are you safe staying here tonight?"
"No," Mom whispered.
It was a single word. I'd never felt so ashamed of needing to hear it.
Ortiz asked Vanessa to sit apart while Chen photographed the bruises along Mom's forearm. Sofia opened a folder on her phone. There were dates beside each video: Vanessa taking away Mom's walker, calling her useless, forcing her to swallow pills she couldn't identify. I hadn't been in those rooms. I had believed my wife's explanation that Mom was getting difficult with age.
"You've kept these for months?" I asked Sofia.
"I tried telling you," she said. "Three times. You told me not to take sides."
The officers found a stack of papers in Vanessa's desk drawer. One was a durable power of attorney naming Vanessa as Mom's agent. Another claimed my father had acknowledged an apartment transfer in 2013. Dad had died the following year. The signature on that older page looked exactly like his.
"Who prepared this?" Chen asked.
"Our family attorney," Vanessa answered. "Adam Vale."
I knew Adam. He had advised my father. He'd handled my hotel company's loans. I trusted him enough to sign documents without reading every page.
"Who forged Dad's name?" I demanded.
Vanessa pointed straight at me. "You did, Mateo. Remember the hospital form you signed for Rafael? Adam kept a copy."

For one terrible second, I remembered a pen, a hospital hallway, and my father's name beneath my hand.
Then Chen asked, "Mr. Alvarez, would you like to explain why your handwriting is on this document?"
