Chapter 11 - The Woman at the Door
Hospital security moved toward Rebecca.
She raised her hands.
"If I wanted the baby, I wouldn't have come alone."
Nora almost laughed at the insanity of the sentence.
"Then why are you here?"
Rebecca looked at Elaine.
"Because your mother called me."
Nora turned.
Elaine didn't deny it.
"Mom."
"I was trying to keep you alive."
Rebecca closed the door.
"Everett knows Locker B was opened."
Daniel's voice came through speakerphone. "How?"
"Because the facility is monitored by a company he owns."
Mara cursed.
Rebecca continued. "Your evidence is already compromised. Copy everything now."
Nora studied her. "Why help us?"
For the first time, Rebecca's face broke.
"Because Owen called me from the lake house."
Nora stood despite the pain in her body.
"You spoke to him?"
"Yes."
"Where is he?"
"I don't know."
"Stop lying to me."
Rebecca pulled a phone from her purse and opened an audio message.
Owen's voice.
Weak. Breathless.
"Rebecca, if anything happens, tell Nora I never left her. Tell her Charles isn't the one who ordered it."
Nora's knees nearly gave out.
The message continued.
"Tell Daniel to check the foundation ambulance contract."
Mara looked at Daniel through the phone screen.
"Ambulance contract?"
Rebecca nodded.
"Halcyon owns two private medical transport companies."

Then she said the part that changed everything.
"One of them picked Owen up from the lake house."
