Chapter 18 - The Families

The arrest of Everett Sloan broke Halcyon open.
It did not clean it up.
Mara spent the next forty-eight hours with federal investigators, state auditors, and attorneys representing families she had never met.
The guardianship files were real.
Some had been temporary and lawful.
Others had been manipulated.
Parents pressured during medical crises.
Mothers told they were signing housing forms.
Beneficiary accounts controlled by lawyers tied to Halcyon.
Millions moved.
Nora sat in a hospital conference room with Lucy asleep against her and Owen beside her in a borrowed sweatshirt.
She touched his bruised face.
"You should have told me."
"I thought I could finish it before she was born."
"Men keep deciding what I can survive."
Owen lowered his eyes.
"You're right."
Across the room, Charles waited alone.
Nora finally looked at him.
"You knew enough to stop this years ago."
"Yes."
"And you didn't."
"No."
"Why?"
Charles looked at Daniel.
"Because I thought protecting one child excused what happened to others."
Daniel flinched.
Charles didn't soften it.
"It didn't."
Federal agents entered carrying a sealed evidence bag.
Inside was Nora's missing hospital bag.
Recovered from Everett's storage unit.
The sealed envelope Owen had placed inside was still there.
Nora opened it.
The first page was not financial evidence.
It was a letter addressed to Lucy.
The second page was a list of twenty-three names.
Mothers.
Babies.
And one name Nora recognized immediately.
May you like
Mara Ellison.
Several families had believed the paperwork was routine because it arrived during the worst hours of their lives: after surgery, after eviction, after a newborn was admitted to intensive care. That timing was not accidental. Halcyon had built an entire legal strategy around the moment people were too exhausted to read every page.
