Chapter 13 - Charles Mercer Bleeds

Nora had never seen her father afraid.

Now he could barely stand.

"What happened?"

"Parking garage. Two men."

Rebecca locked the door again.

Charles saw her and laughed bitterly. "Of course you're here."

"Your friend Everett is cleaning up," she said.

"He hasn't been my friend in twenty years."

Nora snapped. "Enough. Where is Owen?"

Charles pressed a towel to his temple.

"I don't know."

"Then tell me what you do know."

He looked at Lucy.

"The trust was built by your grandfather. It owns land, mineral rights, and private shares. Everett found a way to borrow against future distributions through guardianship-controlled accounts."

"And you let him?"

Charles closed his eyes.

"I signed the first deal."

Elaine started crying again.

"Charles—"

"I thought it was temporary. Then he had leverage."

Daniel's voice came from Nora's phone. "What leverage?"

Charles looked toward the speaker.

"Your signature."

Daniel went still.

"What signature?"

"The one on the first fraudulent trust authorization."

"I was sixteen."

"I know."

Silence.

Daniel's childhood signature had been used to make him look involved from the beginning.

Charles had spent twenty years protecting him by feeding Everett money and access.

Or that was Charles's version.

Nora stared at her father.

"And now Lucy?"

"If Everett gets guardianship control over her, he can unlock the final trust reserve."

"How much?"

Charles's answer was almost a whisper.

"Eighty-four million dollars."

Charles admitted that the first year had felt like compromise, the second like debt, and every year after that like captivity. He had told himself he was keeping Daniel out of prison, keeping Elaine from scandal, keeping Nora untouched. In reality, he had kept Everett's machine alive long enough to reach Lucy.
