Chapter 14 - The Closed Center

Daniel, Mara, Eli, and two Dallas detectives reached the old Mercer recovery center before dawn.

The gate was chained.

The chain was new.

Inside, one hallway light was on.

"Police are five minutes out," Mara said.

Daniel cut the chain anyway.

"My sister waited nine months. She doesn't get five more minutes."

They entered through a side door.

The building smelled of bleach and wet drywall.

Room 12 contained a cot.

Fresh blanket.

Used IV tubing.

Blood-stained gauze.

Eli found Owen's wallet under the bed.

Daniel closed his fist around it.

"He was here."

Mara opened a locked cabinet.

Inside were sedatives, patient intake forms, and a clipboard.

One line had been scratched out.

KESSLER, OWEN - TRANSFERRED 03:40.

Destination blank.

Then they heard a thump from the supply room.

Daniel drew the small handgun Claire had insisted he carry.

"Police!" Mara shouted.

"Mara," Daniel muttered. "You're not police."

"It sounded better."

The door opened from inside.

A man stumbled out.

Not Owen.

Victor Shaw.

Halcyon's security chief.

His wrists were zip-tied.

His face was bruised.

"Everett knows," he gasped.

Mara stared at him. "You took my credentials."

"To make it look like you found the files illegally."

"Why?"

Victor coughed.

"Because Daniel was supposed to disappear first."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where is Owen?"

Victor looked at him.

"With the person you still haven't suspected."

The recovery center had not been abandoned the way the public records claimed. In the rear office, Mara found grocery receipts from the previous week, fresh batteries, disposable phones, and a printed list of hospital discharge times. Nora's name was highlighted. Beside it, someone had written: POSTPARTUM WINDOW - MAXIMUM LEVERAGE.
