Chapter 3 - Nine Hundred Forty Thousand

Across town, Mara Ellison had spent six hours trying to prove she had not stolen files she had never opened.

Halcyon Community Fund's internal security chief, Victor Shaw, stood behind her desk while two technicians copied her laptop.

"Your credentials accessed restricted payment records at 2:11 a.m.," he said.

"I was asleep."

"The system says otherwise."

Mara laughed once. "Then your system is lying."

Three days earlier, she had shown Daniel Mercer a pattern of payments totaling $940,000. The money had left Halcyon's emergency housing fund through six vendors that shared the same mailing address.

Daniel had gone quiet.

Then he had said, "Don't tell anyone yet."

Yesterday, he texted her.

YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT THE MONEY.

Twenty minutes later:

IF THEY BLAME YOU, I LEFT SOMETHING WITH CLAIRE.

Then Daniel disappeared.

Victor slid a printed access log toward her. "Why would Daniel frame you?"

"He wouldn't."

"You sound sure."

"I am."

Her phone rang.

Claire Mercer.

Mara answered immediately.

Claire was crying.

"They found Daniel's car."

Mara stood.

"Where?"

"By the Trinity River. Driver's door open. Blood on the passenger side."

Victor's expression sharpened.

Claire kept talking. "He left me two envelopes and a key. One envelope has your name on it."

Mara looked at Victor.

He was already looking at the key ring on her desk.

"Don't give Halcyon anything," Mara said.

Victor reached for his phone.

Too late.

Claire whispered, "Corporate security is already here."

Mara had built her career on numbers because numbers did not flatter, threaten, or pretend. A payment either cleared or it did not. A timestamp existed or it did not. But looking at the false access log with her name on it, she understood that numbers could lie beautifully when powerful people controlled the system recording them.
