Chapter 12 - The Planned Tragedy

Vanessa intended to announce a pregnancy emergency after the merger vote.
The documents did not describe a detailed medical performance.
Only a public statement drafted by a crisis firm.
PRIVATE LOSS.
FAMILY REQUESTS PRIVACY.
The trust voting authority would end afterward.
But by then, the hotel transfers would be complete.
Bell River would hold the assets.
The lie would die after doing its job.
Marcello read the draft twice.
“She planned condolences.”
That was the detail that made her angriest.
A room full of people would comfort Vanessa for a baby she had actually lost months earlier, while unknowingly helping hide a corporate deal.
Grief turned into camouflage.
Lucia left the room and was sick in the downstairs bathroom.
Later she found Elena on the terrace.
“I told her thirty days.”
Elena did not soften it.
“Yes.”
“I thought I was saving Luca’s company.”
“You were avoiding the truth.”
“I know.”
Then she said:
“I want to make a statement to the board.”
“Do it.”
“And investigators.”
“Do that too.”
“You don’t hate me?”
“I’m angry with you.”
“That wasn’t my question.”
“No.”
Elena looked toward the lawn where Lily chased bubbles with a housekeeper.
“Hate makes everything too simple.”
The next morning, Lucia resigned from the family trust committee.
She disclosed the clinic visit, the email, and her knowledge that Vanessa’s pregnancy had ended.
She denied knowing about later falsified documents or asset transfers.
Investigators verified parts of her account.
Then Vanessa’s attorney requested a meeting.
Marcello said no immediately.
Elena said:
“I’ll go.”
“Why?”
“Because this started when your family treated Vanessa like a vessel for an heir.”
“And?”
“And she used that. But I want to hear what she says when the man she blames isn’t in the room.”
The meeting was recorded with lawyers present.
Vanessa sat across from Elena.
For a long time, neither spoke.
Then Vanessa said:
“Do you know why Lily saw the belly fall?”
Elena’s expression changed.
May you like
Vanessa leaned forward.
“Because someone cut the strap.”
