Chapter 8 - What Survived the Fire

Marcello crossed the room in two steps.

He pulled the burning folder from the fireplace with metal tongs.

Elena rushed Lily back into the hall.

Security arrived.

Vanessa did not resist.

She simply watched the papers blacken.

“You wanted proof,” she said.

Marcello stared at her.

“Now you look guilty.”

“I already look guilty.”

“That’s not the same thing.”

The fire damaged most of the folder.

One page survived because it had been folded inside a thick envelope.

Vanessa had requested a five-million-dollar line of credit against Luca’s expected trust distribution two weeks before his death.

Luca had refused to sign.

After his death, the request reappeared.

This time with Vanessa acting as guardian for the unborn heir.

Daniel checked the lender.

Four point eight million had already been drawn.

Lucia looked at Vanessa as if she no longer recognized her.

“What did you spend it on?”

“What did you spend it on?”

Her answer came softly.

“Keeping Bell River alive.”

So the fake pregnancy had not only created voting power.

It had created borrowing power.

Vanessa’s father’s company had been collapsing.

The pregnancy bought time.

Daniel said:

“You continued a false representation to obtain financing.”

Vanessa’s lawyer, now present, held up a hand.

“My client is not answering further questions.”

Marcello stopped asking.

Police were not yet involved in everything.

That changed when Daniel found the forged trust certificates.

He referred the matter to financial investigators.

The family could no longer contain it as an internal scandal.

Vanessa was escorted from the estate.

Lily watched from Elena’s arms.

“Is baby lady mad?”

“She’s having a hard day.”

Lily thought about that.

Then asked:

“Where is her baby?”

She had no answer simple enough for three.

That night, Marcello found another note in Luca’s laptop bag.

Luca — I need to tell you in person. The first test was real. The later records are not.

Marcello read it twice.

The first test was real.

The later records are not.

Then his phone rang from an unknown number.

A woman said:

“Mr. DeLuca? This is Camille Ross.”

May you like

Marcello stood.

“I think your brother was trying to expose me before he died.”
