Chapter 15 - Luca’s Last Meeting

The phone was dead.
A technician recovered the data.
One audio file mattered.
Luca’s voice.
They had met in Luca’s office forty-eight hours before the sailing accident.
“You used my division to support Bell River without telling me.”
Vanessa answered:
“Your division benefits if the properties recover.”
“That isn’t the point.”
Daniel said:
“The structure is defensible.”
“Defensible is what lawyers say when honest would be embarrassing.”
Marcello almost smiled.
That sounded exactly like his brother.
The recording continued.
Luca revealed he knew Vanessa was pregnant.
For several minutes, the fight became something painfully ordinary.
Two people scared about a baby.
Then Luca said:
“The child changes nothing about Bell River.”
Vanessa whispered:
“It changes everything.”
“No. We fix the company first. Then we tell the family about the baby.”
“The trust proxy—”
Luca snapped:
“No.”
Then the clearest line.
“My child will not be a financial instrument.”
Elena looked at Marcello.
That sentence became the center of everything.
Luca knew the trust could give the unborn baby leverage.
Vanessa later did exactly what he feared.
The recording ended with Luca telling Daniel he would disclose the conflict to the board Monday.
Police reviewed the old accident file again because of the timing.
The conclusion remained unchanged.
No evidence of sabotage.
He would not build another lie just because it would make the story cleaner.
Then Lucia asked:
“Why was Luca’s phone in the blue room?”
Vanessa finally answered.
“He gave it to me before he left that morning.”
“Why?”
“He said if anything happened to him, Marcello should hear the recording.”
Marcello stared at her.
“You hid it.”
“Yes.”
“For eight months.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
May you like
Her answer came almost inaudibly.
“Because the first thing Luca says after the argument is that the baby must never be used for money.”
