Chapter 7 - Luca Knew

Luca’s letter was unfinished.

That made it worse.

He had discovered Bell River before he died.

The company already existed.

Vanessa had helped create it with her father eighteen months earlier.

The scheme had not begun with the pregnancy.

The pregnancy became protection after the fact.

Marcello pulled archived emails from Luca’s account.

Then Daniel found a private folder saved locally on Luca’s old laptop.

Luca had been investigating property purchases.

DeLuca Hospitality sold two aging hotels to outside investors.

Months later, Bell River bought controlling interests in the same properties at discounted debt values.

Vanessa’s family benefited.

Luca suspected inside information.

He had confronted Vanessa.

One draft email read:

You keep telling me this is business. It stops being business when you hide your family on the other side of the table.

Elena watched Marcello read it.

“Did Luca tell you any of this?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because my brother thought asking for help meant admitting he wasn’t the smartest person in the room.”

Then Daniel found a calendar entry on Luca’s phone backup.

MEET C.R. — PREGNANCY / TRUST.

C.R.

The meeting was scheduled for the day after Luca died.

Marcello stared at the date.

“So he knew Vanessa was pregnant.”

Elena said:

“Or knew she claimed she was.”

They did not know which.

Then estate security called.

Not through the front gate.

Through the service entrance.

Marcello found her upstairs in the blue room stuffing documents into a suitcase.

“Stop.”

“You people search one room and think you know my life.”

Marcello stood in the doorway.

“Put the papers down.”

“No.”

“Vanessa.”

“I lost Luca. I lost the baby. I lost my place in this family in six weeks.”

Marcello answered quietly:

“And then you decided to steal a new place.”

“You would have thrown me away.”

“I would have grieved with you.”

“You don’t know that.”

“No.”

“But you never gave us the chance.”

Then Lily’s voice came from the hallway.

“Daddy?”

Marcello turned.

Vanessa moved.

Not toward Lily.

May you like

Toward the fireplace.

And threw Luca’s remaining papers into the flames.
