Chapter 18 - Luca’s Eight Million

For twelve hours, Marcello wondered if everything he believed about his brother was wrong.

Then the accountants found the answer.

The payment schedule was fake.

Luca’s name had been added after his death.

To make Bell River look like a family-approved venture if regulators ever reviewed it.

A dead man could not deny receiving money.

Except Luca had left records.

The recovered audio destroyed the fiction.

Daniel admitted he inserted Luca’s name at Vanessa’s request after the accident.

Vanessa admitted it too.

Then shame for feeling relief.

Elena said:

“You’re allowed to be glad your brother didn’t betray you.”

“I’m also angry I needed him to be perfect.”

“He wasn’t.”

Marcello looked at her.

“No.”

Luca had hidden financial trouble.

Delayed telling Marcello.

Tried to solve Bell River alone.

He had also drawn a line around his child.

The civil settlement took months.

DeLuca Hospitality recovered control over the disputed properties.

Some money was lost to legal fees and market damage.

Vanessa entered a negotiated resolution on several financial and document-related charges, with restitution and other penalties determined by the court.

Daniel faced separate consequences for his role.

Dr. Ross cooperated with regulators and lost professional privileges tied to her misconduct.

Lucia was never charged.

Investigators found no evidence she knew the later documents were falsified or the larger asset deal had been built on the continuing deception.

But within the family, consequences did not require a criminal charge.

Marcello removed her from trust authority for a year.

“That hurts,” she said.

“I know.”

“You still think it’s right?”

“Yes.”

“Then do it.”

One evening, Marcello returned home to find Lily building a tower with wooden blocks.

She placed one crooked block on top.

“Again.”

Marcello sat on the floor.

“Again.”

He thought of the family.

All those adults terrified of letting one structure fall.

A three-year-old already knew something they did not.

May you like

Sometimes you let it fall.

Then you build better.
