Chapter 16 - The Board Hears Luca

Marcello played the recording at the emergency board meeting.
No dramatic introduction.
No speech.
Just Luca’s voice.
My child will not be a financial instrument.
When the recording ended, nobody spoke.
The board canceled the Bell River transaction.
Vanessa’s voting proxy remained suspended and was later voided based on the false certification record.
Daniel Price was removed as family counsel.
His fee agreement became part of the financial investigation.
Bell River entered restructuring without DeLuca money.
Vanessa’s father called Marcello a traitor.
Marcello answered:
“I’m not in your family.”
Lucia voluntarily testified about what she knew.
She resigned from two committees.
For the first time in decades, the DeLuca board had more independent directors than relatives.
Marcello found that strangely peaceful.
Then came the harder question.
What happened to Vanessa?
Criminal and civil investigations continued over forged documents, trust representations, and financial transactions.
Marcello did not control the outcome.
Vanessa requested one family meeting before proceedings moved further.
Elena said:
“Lily won’t be there.”
They met in the small breakfast room instead of the ballroom.
Vanessa looked smaller without the belly.
Lucia cried the moment she saw her.
Neither moved toward the other.
Finally Lucia said:
“I loved that baby.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“So did I.”
“Then why did you turn him into this?”
“Because when I lost him, every person around me started talking about what came next.”
“I had one day where he was just my baby,” Vanessa said. “Then Daniel called. Then my father called. Then you emailed.”
Vanessa continued:
“I made the first wrong decision because I was grieving.”
She looked at Marcello.
“The next twenty were because I was scared.”
“The rest were because I liked having power.”
Just the ugliest honest sentence she had said.
Then Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
“Where’s Lily?”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“Not here.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Good.”

Then she placed a small envelope on the table.
“It belongs to her.”
