Chapter 1 - The Red Light

The slap came before Richard Whitmore could say his son's name.

Ethan's palm struck the left side of his father's face and snapped the seventy-five-year-old man's head sideways. The room went silent except for Sophia's sobbing.

"How dare you touch her?" Ethan shouted.

Richard staggered one step and caught the edge of a table. Across the room, Sophia stood with her hair tangled around her face and three buttons missing from her blouse. She hugged herself and shook like someone who had just escaped something terrible.

Only Richard knew the truth.

Thirty seconds earlier, Sophia had checked the hallway, ripped open her own blouse, thrown herself backward against the wall, and screamed for help.

Richard slowly straightened.

"Dad, answer me!" Ethan demanded.

Richard looked at his son's face. Forty-two years old, successful, educated, and furious enough to strike first and ask later.

The pain in Richard's cheek mattered less than that.

"I didn't touch her," he said.

Sophia gasped. "He's lying."

Ethan stepped toward him again.

Richard did not raise his fists. He did not argue. He simply lifted one trembling hand and pointed toward the ceiling.

Everyone followed his finger.

A small black security camera sat above the hallway arch.

Its red recording light was glowing.

Sophia stopped crying.

Not slowly.

Instantly.

Richard saw the color leave her face.

"Ethan," she whispered, "that camera hasn't worked in months."

Richard finally looked at her.

"Then why are you afraid of it?"

Ethan turned toward his wife.

For the first time, anger gave way to doubt.

Richard touched his burning cheek and walked toward the study where the security monitor was kept.

Behind him, Sophia suddenly said, "Don't play it."

Ethan froze.

Richard did too.

Because innocent people usually begged to be believed.

They did not beg for the evidence to stay hidden.
