Chapter 18 - Margaret's Last Voice

Richard almost deleted the recording without listening.
Ethan stopped him.
"Dad."
"I don't know if I want this."
"Then we don't play it."
Richard looked at his son.
For once, Ethan was not pushing.
That mattered.
Richard clicked play.
Margaret's voice filled the study.
Weak. Breathless. Still unmistakably hers.
"Richard, if this thing is recording again, stop buying cheap electronics."
Both men laughed through sudden tears.
Then her tone softened.
"Ethan came by today. He is angry with you. Don't punish him for being young enough to think parents are supposed to be perfect."
Richard closed his eyes.
Margaret continued.
"And Ethan, if you ever hear this, your father loves badly sometimes. He loves like a man trying to hold water in his hands. Too tight. Too afraid. But he loves you."
Ethan stared at the desk.
"Mom..."
"One day," the recording continued, "you will both hurt each other. Families do that. The question is whether you use the hurt as evidence that love was fake, or as proof that love needs better habits."
The file ended.
No grand secret.
No hidden accusation.
Just Margaret, telling them eleven years too early what they needed now.
Ethan wiped his face.
Richard reached across the desk.
This time he did not hesitate.
He took his son's hand.
"I forgive you," he said.
Ethan broke.
Richard let him.
Later that evening, Dana called.
Sophia had changed her plea.
Guilty to conspiracy, fraud, evidence tampering, and attempted financial exploitation.
But there was one condition.
She wanted to speak to Ethan before sentencing.
Ethan looked at Richard.
"Should I go?"
Richard shook his head.
"Don't ask me what you should do."
May you like
A small smile appeared.
"Ask yourself why you want to go."
