Chapter 5 - The Signature

By sunrise, Richard had three lawyers, a forensic document examiner, and one private investigator working from the Whitmore estate library.
Ethan stood near the fireplace, looking like he had aged ten years overnight.
"I brought Sophia into this family," he said.
Richard did not look up from the forged power of attorney.
"That isn't a crime."
"I defended her against you."
"That was a mistake."
"I hit you."
Richard finally looked at him.
"That was a choice."
Ethan flinched.
Richard hated hurting him. But forgiveness without truth was only another way to teach someone that consequences were optional.
The document examiner arrived just after eight.
Two hours later, he confirmed what Richard already knew.
The signature was a traced composite built from at least three authentic samples.
"Who had access to your signed documents?" he asked.
Richard and Ethan answered at the same time.
"Sophia."
The investigator, Dana Brooks, entered carrying a laptop.
"You need to see this."
She had searched corporate filings connected to Sophia's maiden name.
A company called Northline Advisory had been formed eight months earlier.
Its registered manager was Julian Mercer.
Sophia's older brother.
Northline had received three unexplained payments totaling $860,000 from vendors doing business with Whitmore Capital.
Ethan's face hardened.
"Julian is broke."
"Not anymore," Dana said.
Richard leaned back.
"What does Northline own?"
Dana clicked again.
A downtown condo.
Two luxury vehicles.
And a controlling interest in a struggling medical technology company called Veridian Health.
Ethan stared at the name.
"Sophia wanted Dad to invest in Veridian last year."
Richard remembered.
He had refused after finding inflated projections.
Dana nodded. "Veridian has a debt payment due Monday afternoon. If it defaults, Northline loses everything."
Richard understood before anyone said it.
Sophia needed money.
A great deal of it.
And Monday's board meeting was not simply about removing him.
It was about gaining access before a deadline.
Dana closed the laptop.
"There's one problem."
"What?" Ethan asked.
"Someone accessed Mr. Whitmore's family trust portal at 2:13 this morning."
Richard's stomach tightened.
"From where?"
May you like
Dana looked directly at Ethan.
"Your house."
