Chapter 19 - The Visit

Ethan met Sophia in a county interview room with glass between them.

She looked different without the house, the clothes, the polished certainty.

But her eyes were the same.

"You came," she said.

"Once."

Sophia pressed her hand to the glass.

He did not.

"I did love you," she said.

"I believe you."

She seemed surprised.

"Then you understand."

"No. Loving me doesn't excuse using me."

Her mouth tightened.

"Your father poisoned everything between us."

"My father didn't forge my signature."

"He made you weak around him."

"No. You taught me that certainty was strength. It isn't. Sometimes certainty is just fear wearing a suit."

Sophia looked away.

Ethan had rehearsed angry speeches for months.

He used none of them.

"I came because I needed to see whether I still wanted you to tell me who I am."

She looked back.

"And?"

"I don't."

He stood.

Sophia's voice sharpened. "Ethan, wait."

He paused.

"Your father will control you again."

Ethan almost smiled.

"Then I'll ask questions."

He walked out.

At sentencing, Sophia received a lengthy prison term. Julian received more. Crane lost his license and went to prison. Thomas avoided prison after cooperation but lost the career that had defined him.

Whitmore Capital survived the investigation by publishing every internal finding and returning misappropriated funds.

Richard stepped down as chief executive six months later.

Not because Sophia proved him incompetent.

Because he finally chose retirement himself.

At the final board meeting, Ethan expected his father to name him successor chairman.

Richard did not.

He named an independent director.

Afterward Ethan asked why.

Richard smiled.

"Because you are my son, not my replacement."

Then he handed Ethan a small brass key.

"What's this?"

"Your mother's garden shed."

Ethan frowned.

May you like

Richard's smile widened.

"She left you something too."
