Chapter 16 - The People Who Looked Away

The flash drive contained internal accounting records from Whitmore Capital.

Sophia had collected them as leverage.

At first Richard assumed she was lying again.

Then Dana verified the first transaction.

And the second.

Three senior executives had been routing vendor rebates into consulting companies for nearly a decade.

Thomas Reed had discovered part of it two years earlier and buried the audit to protect the company from scandal.

"You all thought I was the only snake in the garden," Sophia said from the other side of the interview-room glass.

Richard watched her without expression.

"She wants a deal," Dana said.

"Of course she does."

Ethan stood beside his father.

The scandal would cost millions and destroy reputations.

Richard surprised him.

"Turn everything over."

"Everything?"

"Everything."

"The company could lose contracts."

"Then it loses them."

Richard looked at Ethan.

"I spent my life believing protecting the family name meant hiding weakness. Sophia understood that better than I did. She knew silence was our reflex."

Ethan thought of Thanksgiving dinners where uncomfortable truths disappeared under polite conversation. Board meetings where problems were managed before they became public. The hallway where he had believed the first story that preserved the picture he already understood.

"No more," Richard said.

That afternoon, federal investigators entered Whitmore Capital headquarters.

Two executives were escorted out.

Thomas Reed surrendered his law license and agreed to cooperate.

Dr. Crane was charged with falsifying medical records and conspiracy.

Julian Mercer was arrested at O'Hare with two passports and $90,000 in cash.

Sophia remained in custody.

The case should have felt finished.

It didn't.

Because one question still sat between father and son.

Ethan finally asked it in Richard's study.

"Are you ever going to forgive me?"

Richard looked at the chair where Ethan had sat as a boy doing homework.

"I don't know."

Ethan's face fell.

May you like

Richard continued.

"But I am willing to find out."
