Chapter 7 - Margaret's File

Richard walked to the library safe and entered a code he had not used in eleven years.

Inside lay a blue leather folder.

MARGARET WHITMORE.

Ethan's mother had died from pancreatic cancer when he was thirty-one.

To Ethan, the final year had always been simple: she was sick, Richard was terrified, and the family survived badly.

Sophia had found a way to turn grief into a weapon.

Richard opened the folder.

"Your mother asked me to keep this until you were ready. I decided you never needed it. That was wrong."

Inside were medical directives, letters, and recordings Margaret had made during treatment.

Ethan picked up one envelope.

FOR ETHAN.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

Margaret's handwriting filled six pages.

She wrote about her fear of losing control over her own medical decisions. She wrote that Richard had fought with doctors because he wanted more treatment while she wanted comfort care.

Then she wrote the sentence Sophia had apparently twisted.

Your father will fight death until he mistakes love for control. If that happens, remind him that loving me also means letting me choose.

Ethan looked up.

"You argued with her."

"Every day," Richard said. "And eventually I listened."

There were no abuse allegations.

No violence.

No secret institutionalization.

Only a dying woman describing a marriage under unbearable pressure.

At the bottom of the folder was a memory card.

Richard inserted it into the computer.

Margaret appeared on screen, thinner than Ethan remembered, smiling weakly.

"If Sophia ever shows you pieces of this," she said, "then she found the cabinet I told Richard to lock."

Ethan leaned forward.

Richard stared at the screen.

Margaret had recorded this before Sophia was even part of the family.

Then she said something neither man expected.

"And if she found that cabinet, she may also have found the Mercer letters."

Ethan whispered, "Mercer?"

Sophia's maiden name.

May you like

Richard's face changed.

He had forgotten those letters existed.
