Chapter 14 - The Fifth Signature

Harold Kane had known me since I was twelve.
He taught me how to read a balance sheet.
He gave the toast at my wedding.
And when federal agents asked him to stop, he ran.
He made it six feet.
They arrested him beside the conference room doors.
Harold’s company had received twelve million dollars in “consulting fees” from Lang Equity over four years.
He recruited the other directors.
He drafted the first version of Resolution 14-B.
Victor supplied the legal structure.
Claire supplied the family crisis.
Owen supplied the access.
Ben supplied the financial approvals.
Harold asked for a lawyer.
Claire already had three.
Victor refused to speak.
I spent the next six hours with regulators.
Sterling Medical Systems publicly disclosed the reserve shortfall that afternoon.
But at 6:40 p.m., I walked into Emma’s room.
She held up a drawing.
Three stick figures.
Her.
Me.
Rachel.
No Claire.
“What’s this?” I asked.
“Our safe people.”
I sat beside her.
She pointed to my stick figure.
“I made you really tall.”
“I noticed.”
“You look weird.”
“Also noticed.”
She giggled.
It was the best sound I had heard in days.
Then Rachel handed me her phone.
“You need to see this.”
A news site had published confidential pages from the pension audit.
The leak exposed employee names, account numbers, and internal medical-benefit data.
Not enough to ruin the investigation.
Enough to terrify workers.
The headline blamed me.
MICHAEL STERLING’S DISCLOSURE CHAOS PUTS THOUSANDS AT RISK.
I called Lena.
“Who had the raw file?”
“Five people.”
“Names.”
She gave me four I expected.
Then the fifth.
Rachel Sterling.
My sister stared at me.
“I never had that file.”
According to the access log, she had downloaded it that morning.
