Chapter 19 - Sentencing Day

Claire pleaded guilty to child endangerment, conspiracy, fraud-related charges, and witness tampering.

Victor went to trial.

The jury convicted Victor on eleven counts.

The pension fraud case took months to untangle.

The reserve recovery took longer.

We sold two non-core divisions.

Lang assets were seized.

Insurance paid part.

My family trust covered more.

By the end of the first year, ninety-four percent of the missing reserve had been restored or secured through court-approved recovery agreements.

I no longer served as CEO.

I stayed chairman under an independent board.

On Claire’s sentencing day, I did not bring Emma.

I read a statement.

Not about revenge.

About choices.

“You did not push a symbol,” I said.

“You pushed a seven-year-old child who trusted the adults around her to be adults.”

Claire stared at the table.

“You used her fear because you believed my love for her could be turned into a weapon against me.”

I paused.

“You were right about one thing.”

Claire looked up.

“I did choose her first.”

The judge sentenced her.

After court, Victor was led through another hallway in handcuffs for his own sentencing hearing.

He saw me.

“You destroyed your father’s company,” he said.

I looked at him.

“No.”

“You think honesty saved it?”

“No.”

I stepped closer, stopping well outside the security line.

“Honesty just stopped you from owning the lie.”

That evening, I picked Emma up from school.

She climbed into the car carrying a science project made from cardboard and too much glue.

“How was court?” she asked.

“Finished.”

“Is Claire coming home?”

“No.”

Emma looked out the window.

Then she whispered, “Good.”

I reached for her hand.

She squeezed mine.

At the next light, my phone buzzed.

A message from Lena.

WE FOUND THE FINAL RESERVE ACCOUNT.

I opened the attachment.

The account held enough money to complete the restoration.

But the name on it made me stare at the screen.
