Chapter 9 - My Father’s Last Secret

My father built Sterling Medical Systems from a rented warehouse and two borrowed machines.

Ben told me the first pension transfer happened when the company faced a massive product recall.

My father moved forty million dollars out of the reserve to keep factories open.

He intended to repay it within ninety days.

Then lawsuits hit.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked.

Ben stared at the table.

“Your father made me promise.”

“He was dead.”

“I know.”

“Then your promise died with him.”

Ben flinched.

He deserved that.

Victor Lang discovered the old transfers during acquisition talks.

Instead of reporting them, he used them.

He offered Ben a deal.

Help move money between entities.

Keep the reserve looking whole.

Then Lang Equity would acquire Sterling and refinance everything before regulators noticed.

Ben agreed to temporary transfers.

He told himself he was protecting employees.

Then Claire obtained the files.

She realized the secret could remove me.

“If Michael learns the truth,” she told Ben, “he’ll self-report.”

So she needed me gone before I discovered the hole.

The board resolution.

The staged fall.

The CPS complaint.

All of it.

“What about my father’s red notebook?” I asked.

Ben looked up.

“What notebook?”

Lena and I exchanged a glance.

If Ben didn’t take it, Claire did.

Or Victor.

I called Rachel.

“Where are you?”

“At the hospital with Emma.”

“Stay there.”

“Michael, what happened?”

“Dad left something behind.”

Silence.

Then Rachel whispered, “The red notebook?”

My pulse jumped.

“You knew?”

“Not everything.”

“Rachel.”

She exhaled.

“He gave me a letter the week before he died. He said if anyone ever asked about the notebook, I was supposed to open it.”

“Where is the letter?”

“At my house.”

A crash sounded over the phone.

Rachel stopped talking.

“Rachel?”

Another sound.

Glass.

May you like

Then her voice dropped to a whisper.

“Someone’s inside.”
