Chapter 18 - What We Chose to Save

Six weeks after the gala, I stood before four hundred employees in our main manufacturing plant.
Cameras were not allowed.
No investors.
No press.
Just the people whose retirement money had been treated like a private chessboard.
I told them everything I legally could.
“My father made the first unauthorized transfer.”
The room went silent.
“I inherited a company. I also inherited a lie.”
Nobody moved.
“I’m not asking you to forgive that. I’m telling you what we are doing now.”
A man in the front row raised his hand.
“Are you going to lose the company?”
“Maybe.”
“Then why do it?”
“Because it isn’t mine if keeping it requires stealing from you.”
Afterward, an older machinist named Carl shook my hand.
“My wife retires next year.”
“I know.”
“You better fix this.”
“I will.”
He held my eyes.
“Don’t promise.”
I nodded.
“You’re right.”
At home, Emma sat on the couch with her cast covered in signatures.
She had started therapy.
Nightmares still woke her.
Sometimes she asked if Claire could come back.
I never lied.
“No.”
“Ever?”
“Not unless a judge changes something. And I would fight that.”
Emma thought for a second.
“Okay.”
Rachel moved into the guest house for a while.
Nora returned as Emma’s nanny.
This time, she reported to no spouse.
No security chief.
Directly to me and Rachel.
Emma had added Nora and Lena to her drawing.
I smiled.
“That’s a lot of people.”
Emma nodded.
“Safe people tell the truth even when it’s bad.”
My throat tightened.
“Yes.”
She looked at me.
“Grandpa didn’t?”
I could have protected his memory.
Instead, I protected hers.
“Not always.”
Emma nodded slowly.
Then she asked, “Did you?”
I looked at my daughter.
“No. Not always.”
May you like
She handed me a crayon.
“Then do better.”
