Chapter 17 - The Man Behind the Plan

Claire finally told the truth in pieces.
Not because she was sorry.
Because prison made loyalty expensive.
Victor designed the gala trap. He told her, “You don’t need to beat Michael in business. You need to make him stop being a businessman for thirty seconds.”
That was the plan.
Push Emma lightly.
Catch her before she fell.
Make it look careless.
Let me see enough to become furious.
Then Richard or Owen would step between us.
Cameras would restart.
I would hit someone.
The board would suspend me by morning.
Claire admitted she shoved harder than planned because Emma said, “Dad knows about the paper.”
The prosecutor asked Claire, “Did you intend to seriously injure Emma Sterling?”
“No.”
“Did you intentionally push her?”
Claire looked at the table.
“Yes.”
I was not in the room.
I read the transcript later.
Victor denied ordering it.
But Claire had saved voice messages.
One recorded the morning of the gala.
Victor said, “If the girl has seen the resolution, use that. She’s the trigger now.”
Another said, “Michael protects first and thinks second. Count on it.”
Sterling’s lenders agreed to emergency financing under independent oversight.
The board appointed Lena temporary executive chair while I took a leave.
I accepted.
For the first time in my adult life, losing control of the company felt like protecting it.
Then Ben came to see me.
He looked ten years older.
“I’m pleading guilty to the false reporting.”
I nodded.
“I figured.”
“I need you to know something.”
“What?”
“Your father repaid part of the reserve.”
“How much?”
“Thirty-two million.”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because Victor stole it back.”
Ben placed a statement in front of me.
The account receiving the money was controlled by Lang Equity.
