Chapter 6 - The Trap Was Me

I listened to the recording six times.
Emma had never been the target.
I was.
Claire pushed my daughter because she expected me to react exactly the way any father would.
She wanted me furious.
Public.
Violent.
Then Resolution 14-B would look reasonable.
The board could suspend me.
I sat in the diner booth with my hands flat on the table.
Nora watched me.
“That’s why I never trusted her,” she said.
“You knew she’d hurt Emma?”
“No. If I had known that, I would’ve taken Emma and called you from a police station.”
I nodded.
That was fair.
Lena examined the memory card.
“This is powerful, but Claire’s lawyers will attack chain of custody.”
“Then we get more.”
My phone rang.
Hospital.
Rachel sounded frantic.
“Michael, get back here.”
“What happened?”
“Someone came to move Emma.”
I stood.
“Who?”
“A private medical transport team.”
My heart stopped.
“They had papers.”
“What papers?”
“A court order.”
We reached the hospital in twelve minutes.
Two men in gray uniforms were already arguing with security.
Dana Ruiz from CPS stood beside them.
Claire stood ten feet away with her attorney.
She looked calm again.
Dana handed me a copy.
TEMPORARY PROTECTIVE ORDER.
The petition claimed I had become unstable after the gala, threatened Claire, fired security staff without cause, and removed evidence from the family home.
The emergency order temporarily barred me from taking Emma out of the hospital.
Claire was listed as approved caregiver.
I looked at the judge’s signature.
Then the filing time.
7:52 p.m.
Twenty-six minutes before Emma fell.
I held the paper toward Dana.
“This was filed before the incident.”
Dana’s face changed.
Claire’s attorney took one step backward.
I looked at Claire.
“You knew she was going to fall.”
Claire said nothing.
Then Emma’s small voice came from the room behind us.
“Dad?”
I turned.
She was sitting upright in bed.
May you like
And in her good hand, she held a phone.
“I recorded her too.”
