Chapter 16 - THE LAWYER

Thomas Bell had represented Adrian's family for twelve years.
He drafted Oliver's original trust documents.
He knew exactly how difficult it would be for Vanessa to gain control.
Police searched his office.
They found emails with Vanessa.
Not romantic.
Transactional.
She paid him to identify legal weaknesses in Isabella's trust.
He advised that a guardianship petition would be stronger if Adrian's existing caregiver appeared unreliable.
Maria read the email twice.
"He helped design this."
Adrian looked sick.
Thomas denied knowing Vanessa planned violence.
He claimed he thought she wanted a lawful custody strategy.
Then investigators found his invoice language:
RISK EVENT REQUIRED TO SUPPORT CHANGE IN CARE ENVIRONMENT.
Risk event.
The phrase made Maria furious.
A baby nearly drowned because adults had reduced him to a legal condition.
Thomas lost his position immediately.
His records also showed Vanessa had asked a disturbing question three months earlier:
If Adrian died before marriage, who would control Oliver's trust?
The answer was Adrian's brother, Michael.
Police checked Vanessa's searches.
She had looked up Michael's address.
Travel schedule.
Vehicle registration.
Adrian called him at once.
Michael was safe.
But another pattern appeared.
Vanessa was not only building a path to the trust.
She was removing every person who could block her.
Maria.
Isabella.
Possibly Adrian.
Possibly Michael.
Adrian stared at the list and said, "How did I bring this into my son's life?"
Maria answered softly, "By believing someone who worked very hard to be believable."
Then Detective Ruiz entered with one final warrant return.
They had searched Vanessa's private storage unit.
Inside was a nursery.
A fully decorated nursery.
Not for Oliver.
May you like
For a baby girl.
And taped above the crib was a photograph of Adrian.
