Chapter 18 - THE TRUTH ABOUT THE POOL

Adrian did not react.
Maria did.
She grabbed the bench in front of her.
Vanessa's attorney quickly corrected the wording.
"My client means she believed the incident could become fatal once it began."
Vanessa shook her head.
"No. Let me say it right."
She admitted she knew Oliver was in the stroller.
She knew Maria was working nearby.
Her plan depended on Maria seeing the stroller fall.
If Maria saved him, Vanessa would accuse her.
If Maria failed to save him, Vanessa would still accuse her.
Either outcome removed Maria.
The horrifying part was how calmly she said it.
Adrian whispered, "My son was a prop to you."
Vanessa began crying.
"I thought Maria would get there in time."
Maria stood.
"You did not know that."
Vanessa looked at her.
"You always run when he cries."
That sentence silenced the room.
Vanessa had counted on Maria's love for Oliver.
She had weaponized it.
Then prosecutors asked about Isabella.
Vanessa denied ordering her death.
She admitted asking Peter to damage the car so Isabella would become frightened and more dependent on others.
She claimed she expected a breakdown, not a crash.
Peter's testimony contradicted parts of that story.
A jury would decide the rest.
Adrian left the courtroom before the hearing ended.
Maria found him outside.
He said, "I don't know how to forgive myself."
"Then don't start with forgiveness."
He looked at her.
"Start with responsibility."
Months later, Vanessa pleaded guilty to several charges but went to trial on the most serious count connected to Isabella's death.
The verdict came on a rainy Thursday.
Guilty.
Adrian did not celebrate.
Neither did Maria.
Then the prosecutor handed Adrian a sealed envelope recovered from Vanessa's storage unit.

It was addressed to Oliver.
To be opened when he turned eighteen.
