Chapter 17 - THE SECOND NURSERY

The storage-unit nursery made no sense.
Pink blankets.
A white crib.
Boxes of newborn clothes.
A silver frame containing a photograph of Adrian taken from his company website.
On the dresser sat a folder labeled FUTURE.
Inside were fertility clinic brochures.
Adoption agency forms.
And a handwritten plan.
MARRY ADRIAN.
SECURE OLIVER.
EXPAND FAMILY.
REMOVE OLD STRUCTURE.
Maria hated that phrase most.
Old structure.
As if Isabella, Maria, Michael, and everyone Oliver loved were furniture to be cleared out.
Claire admitted Vanessa had talked obsessively about "building the right family."
A wealthy husband.
A child she could legally control.
Eventually a biological or adopted daughter.
A perfect picture.
Anyone who did not fit the picture became a threat.
Prosecutors built the case around attempted harm to Oliver, conspiracy, financial fraud, evidence tampering, and the older homicide investigation involving Isabella.
Peter Hale agreed to testify.
Thomas Bell negotiated his own deal.
Claire accepted responsibility for destroying evidence and failing to intervene.
Maria struggled with that one.
Claire had not pushed the stroller.
But she had watched.
Sometimes doing nothing was still a choice.
Weeks later, Adrian asked Maria to attend a preliminary hearing.
She almost refused.
Then she remembered Vanessa pointing at her beside the pool.
She went.
Vanessa entered in jail clothing.
For the first time, there was no blue dress.
No diamonds.
No performance.
She looked at Adrian.
Then Maria.
Then said something to her attorney.
The attorney stood.
"My client wishes to make a proffer."
The prosecutor frowned.
Vanessa wanted to talk.
But only if Adrian heard it.
May you like
Her first sentence stunned everyone.
"I never meant for Oliver to survive the pool."
