Chapter 16 - THE LAKE HOUSE

Arthur had been monitoring Wren's risks for years.

Not Grace's marriage.

The company.

That distinction mattered.

Caleb opened the report.

Ethan had begun taking unexplained cash advances two years earlier.

Twenty thousand.

Then fifty.

Then six figures.

He lost money in private real-estate deals and used company funds to cover the holes.

Martin helped disguise the withdrawals.

When Walker Development weakened, Victor offered refinancing.

That was how Pierce got inside.

Grace read the dates.

The affair came later.

The financial betrayal came first.

Her phone rang from the hospital.

Ethan.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"Grace."

His voice was small.

"Did you know Martin was stealing?"

"Not at first."

"But later?"

A long silence.

"Yes."

Grace closed her eyes.

"How long?"

"Five months."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"I thought I could fix it."

She laughed without humor.

"That's what people say when they decide another person's right to know is less important than their own fear."

Ethan started crying.

"I was ashamed."

Grace looked at the report.

"You were ashamed of being caught."

"No."

"I was ashamed that everything was falling apart."

"And instead of telling me, you let Lauren turn me into the enemy."

"I know."

Grace's voice stayed quiet.

"No."

"You are only beginning to know."

She ended the call.

Nathan sat beside her.

"You don't have to decide anything today."

Grace looked at the bruise reflected faintly in the dark window.

"I already decided one thing."

"What?"

"I am never again going to confuse protecting someone's pride with loving them."

Caleb closed the file.

Then Marcus entered carrying Samuel's metal case.

Police had released the non-evidentiary family papers.

Inside was a sealed letter.

Grace's name was on it.

She opened it.

Her father's handwriting filled one page.

Gracie,

If a man loves the version of you that makes him feel large, he does not love all of you.

Do not shrink to keep someone comfortable.

Grace pressed the page to her chest.

Then she noticed a second envelope beneath it.

Not addressed to her.

May you like

Addressed to Ethan.

And dated eight years before Grace ever met him.
