Chapter 18 - THE PRICE OF THE LIE

The case moved quickly after Victor's arrest.

Martin cooperated.

He admitted forging Grace's electronic approval.

He admitted disguising the Pierce payments.

He admitted helping Ethan hide company losses.

Lauren cooperated too.

Her testimony helped prosecutors prove Victor's bribery, fraud, intimidation, and role in the sabotage that killed Grace's mother.

Grace never called Lauren innocent.

Being controlled did not erase the people Lauren had hurt.

Ethan pleaded guilty to fraud, conspiracy, forgery, and assault.

The arson charge was dropped after Martin admitted starting the fire.

Grace was glad the record was accurate.

She did not need extra lies to punish a man who had already told enough of his own.

Walker Development entered restructuring.

Three hundred employees feared they were about to lose everything.

Grace called them into the main conference hall.

Nathan sat in the back.

Caleb stood near the wall.

Marcus leaned against the door.

Grace faced the room.

"Walker Development cannot continue the way it was built."

Silence.

"But none of you should lose your future because the people at the top lost their integrity."

She announced a new company.

North Oak Development.

Employee equity.

Protected retirement accounts.

Independent management.

Wren would provide capital without controlling daily operations.

People began to cry.

Grace's voice softened.

"You did the work."

"You deserve ownership in what comes next."

After the meeting, Arthur handed her another letter from Samuel.

Grace opened it alone.

My Gracie,

Love is not proved by how much pain you can absorb.

The right people will never need your silence in order to feel strong.

Grace cried.

Then she felt the baby move.

A small flutter beneath her hand.

She smiled through tears.

For the first time, she stopped thinking about what Ethan had lost.

She thought about what her child would never be taught.

That love meant fear.

Her phone buzzed.

Ethan's sentencing hearing had been scheduled.

His attorney had included one request.

Ethan wanted permission to speak directly to Grace in court.
