Chapter 19 - THE CHILD HE ALMOST LOST

Grace attended sentencing seven months pregnant.

Nathan sat beside her.

Caleb and Marcus sat behind.

Ethan entered in a dark suit.

He looked older.

When the judge allowed him to speak, he faced Grace.

"I spent years believing being loved meant being admired."

Grace stayed still.

"When Grace helped me, I should have felt grateful."

"Instead, I felt exposed."

"Lauren did not create that."

"Victor did not create that."

"I did."

His voice cracked.

"I hit my pregnant wife because I wanted another person to see me as powerful."

"There is no excuse that makes that smaller."

Grace's throat tightened.

"I betrayed her."

"I stole from people who trusted me."

"And I nearly lost the right to ever know my child."

He sat down.

Grace did not forgive him.

But she believed him.

The judge imposed prison time, restitution, and a permanent bar from managing the restructured company.

Six weeks later, Grace went into labor early.

Thirty-six weeks.

Her water broke during a board meeting.

Marcus panicked.

Nathan forgot where he parked.

Caleb argued with a nurse until Grace told him to shut up.

Nine hours later, a baby girl was placed on Grace's chest.

Tiny.

Loud.

Perfect.

"Hi," Grace whispered.

Nathan stood in the corner wiping his eyes.

Marcus asked, "What's her name?"

"Lillian Rose Cole."

Her mother's middle name.

Her grandmother's favorite flower.

"Lily," Caleb said.

Grace smiled.

A nurse handed her a sealed envelope delivered through Caleb's office.

Ethan's handwriting.

Grace opened it.

Please tell her I am sorry I became someone she needed protection from.

If she ever wants to know me, I will meet her on whatever terms keep her safe.

Grace folded the letter.

She promised nothing.

Lily's future would not be built from Ethan's guilt.

Then Nathan's phone rang.

He listened.

His eyes filled.

"What?" Grace asked.

"Victor Pierce was convicted."

Grace closed her eyes.

Her mother's case was finally finished.

Nathan held up one more envelope recovered from Samuel's lake-house box.

Grace saw the name written across the front.

Lillian.
