Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN THE BLACK DRESS

The baby was safe.
Grace cried when the doctor let her hear the heartbeat.
Nathan sat beside her.
Caleb stood near the window.
Marcus had returned to the house with police.
Grace wiped her eyes.
"I thought love meant not making him feel indebted to me."
Nathan shook his head.
"Love is not pretending your help never existed."
Her phone buzzed.
Ethan.
Please tell me the baby is okay.
Grace did not answer.
Caleb opened a tablet.
"We found something."
Walker Development had amended three credit facilities in ninety days.
Grace frowned.
"I approved none of those."
Caleb enlarged a signature.
It looked like hers.
Almost.
"Spousal and beneficial-owner consent," he said.
The guarantee was worth $8.4 million.
Grace stared.
"Where did the money go?"
"Two point six million is missing."
"To who?"
Nathan answered.
"Pierce Advisory."
Marcus entered carrying a second phone found beneath Ethan's desk.
The lock screen was a photo of Lauren.
"Her burner," he said.
The latest message was from Martin Shaw.
Walker Development's CFO.
Grace knew Martin.
He had worked beside Ethan since the company had three employees.
Marcus unlocked the text.
If Grace learns where the Southgate money really went, we're all finished.
Grace looked at Caleb.
Then Nathan.
Then the hospital monitor.
The betrayal was no longer a marriage problem.

Someone had used Ethan, her company, and her name to move millions.
And Martin Shaw was already gone.
